THE TRIP FROM New York City to Washington DC was fine. Although it was Business Class on the express Amtrak train, the seats were disappointingly uncomfortable. But it was only three hours and we could get up and stretch whenever we needed.
We moved from Washington DC in 1986 and have been back only once (twice for San Geraldo) and those visits were more than 25 years ago. So, so far, things are very unfamiliar. We look forward to walking our old neighborhood, Georgetown, which we've been told hasn't changed much. Our first dinner was at our hotel's (Palomar) restaurant, Urbana. Phenomenal. And the most wonderful server. Her name is Esra. An amazing meal and a new friend.
And we had no room left for dessert, so we have to go back for peach pie.

Parsnip:
DeleteThis restaurant was exceptional ... and right downstairs. We were there four times!
Yes...DC has changed ALOT in that time. My very good friend live right off DuPont Circle in a lovely townhouse. I haven't been in two years myself, but I'm familiar with the Hotel Palomar. I've stayed before and always loved it and their service, although I'm more partial to the one in Philly more. their décor is always so cool.
ReplyDeleteI remember your post about the Georgetown house. It was one of my favorites you lived in. Hope your trip is going well. I love train travel....but damn... in the US. we are so far behind Europe in speed, looks and luxury, when it comes to trains and updated technology.
mistress maddie:
DeleteWe walked by our old place and I did get a little nostalgic. As for the train, it was more pleasant and quicker than flying from New York, but the seat (in Business Class, no less) was horribly uncomfortable. AND we were shaken AND stirred all the way to DC. Nothing like train travel here!
@maddie - did you see that gin drink? me gotta look that one up (for science and future tasting)!
ReplyDeleteEverything I indulge in is for science dear.
Deleteanne marie and maddie:
DeleteI had another couple of strange and exceptional gin drinks. I'll try to remember what was in them -- although I'm sure maddie has had them all!
This food will make me want to go to D.C.!
ReplyDeleteJim:
DeleteIt made me glad I was there!
I want to join Anne Marie in her research. Should be fun to be the designated driver. As for the food, nothing comes near my mouth if I don't know what it is! It took Balder Half a couple of years to learn that.
ReplyDeleteDeedles:
DeleteI don't eat it if I don't know what it is... except gin.
You manage to find delicious-looking food wherever you go.
ReplyDeleteKirk:
DeleteWe sure did luck out again on this trip.
Well now... that gourmets delight certainly beats our supper of our grilled tuna steak with cloves of garlic that was followed
ReplyDeletewith a quarter chilled melon that we enjoyed last night. I am almost envious but not of the uncomfortable seats.
Heron:
DeleteYour tuna steak sounds perfect!
My mouth is watering now!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteMine is too when I think about those meals.
Catching up on your posts after a 2 week vacation with my siblings. Looks like you might be having as much fun, and as much food, as we did!
ReplyDeleteWilma:
DeleteSo glad you had fun with siblings. I had one sibling and lots of cousins to enjoy on our trip.
Wow, that all looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard the term, Gin Rickey in ages!
Judy:
DeleteI can't believe I never had one until now.
I don't think I've ever had a Gin Rickey - I must go look it up.
ReplyDeleteSpo:
DeleteThat was my first. I had two more in DC and then tried some exotic gin drinks that were even better.
