The Squatter

Look what showed up on the beach after all the rain.

(Click to hippopotamize.)

But, worse, look at the squatter that showed up in town! I first met him in 2013 (click here).

The "squatter" is in a shop window in Fuengirola and is really a "caganer." He hails (or at least the tradition does) from Catalonia and can be found more commonly around Andorra, Valencia, Northern Catalonia, and Southern France. "El Caganer" means "the crapper" or "the shitter." He's posed more discreetly than he was in 2013.

"IS IT ME OR DOES THAT FRANKINCENSE REEK?!?"

  1. Geez! Straight across the Mediterranean! That's one good swimmer!!
Now to 'the crapper'.....I think we are lacking a whole lot of humour over here, don't you think!? LOVE these old traditions.

I find El Caganer to be hilarious. If I had a nativity scene, that would definitely be a part of it.

I love that hippo. I take it you're not fond of the crapper?

In 2013, a woman was washing clothes just downhill of The Crapper. I thought those expressions this year were priceless.

  4. Sublime and ridiculous - the hippo (in and of itself!) and the crapper in the manger scene. Somehow I don't think it's the Frankincense that smells ...

Frankincense supposedly piney and lemony with a sweet, woody aroma. I've heard biblical poop smelled the same.

I know. That made me smile, and I love the placement in the "pool" of sand.

You don't think his poop might smell kind of like black licorice?

  7. I used to see these 'squatters' also in Xmas crib scenes in Germany, though never in this country. Maybe we Brits just, in a manner of speaking, 'turn our noses up' at depicting such ruderies.

Can you imagine someone in the United States displaying this in a store!?!

Hilarious, especially since one figure had nothing to do with the other.

  9. Good point, Mitch (re the 'Squatter' being displayed in an American store window). The Xtians and other 'God Botherers' would have a field day in making sure the store was bankrupted. All in the name of the Constitution, naturally.

  10. How delightful to live somewhere with a sense of humor - the antithesis of USA today.

One year, members of the city council in Barcelona tried to stop including el caganer in their municipal nativity scene thinking that perhaps some people might be offended. There was a major protest and it's been proudly displayed ever since.
