A Brief[s] Post / Una Breve[s] Entrada

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

WE LIVE ON the beach in Los Boliches. I spend a lot of time on the Paseo along the beach, on the beach, and in the water. I have a lot of "beachware." When I'm on the beach, I prefer to wear a Speedo (brief or boxer brief). Apparently, there are those who don't think the small, tight style is cool. I have noted that there are plenty of very cool men wearing Speedos (briefs and boxer briefs). But the more common trend right now is to wear loose-fitting trunks or very long "board shorts." They have built-in jock support, which in addition to supporting their "jocks," many men use to tuck in the legs of their overly long shorts (to avoid bad tanlines). The few times I've worn loose-fitting trunks, I found the extra fabric hot on my legs.

Anyway, I wanted to share a couple of photos today to show how strange it seems (to me at least) to wear long shorts on the beach only to roll them and tuck them so they resemble Speedo briefs

OK, MAYBE IT'S NOT THE WORST LOOK. NEVER MIND.
OK, TAL VEZ NO ES EL PEOR ASPECTO. ¡OLVIDALO!

  1. It is odd. It used to not be that way. It's like 20 years or so ago, somebody decided that men shouldn't be allowed to show too much leg.

Um...got any photos of yourself in a speedo you'd be willing to share? Just asking.

  2. I don't like the feel of prolonged sun on my skin, and I burn like cheap butter.

I'm a sun worshipper. I don't burn easily, but I DO use SPF 30... especially on top of my shiny head!

  3. That second photo is of a man with a very nice body; not sure why he would object to showing more of it! :) What I hate seeing is very out-of-shape men wearing "plum smugglers" as a coworker of mine used to call them! Hahaha!

It's all about fashion. The second guy clearly wants to look "cool." As for me, I figure everyone has a right to display as much as is legally acceptable no matter their shape. They should just keep it on the beach. What drives me crazy are the guys that come into the cafes shirtless or in bathings suits and then imprint their bare, sweaty skin (and crotches) on the chairs. Ugh!

  4. Hahaha....looks like we were on the same page today with swim wear in posts. I prefer square cuts. They give coverage and fit tight. I can't wear speedo,as I'm short. They look better on tall gents like yourself. The boards shorts are popular here with straight guy for the majority.

I never knew the rule about Speedos being better on tall people. There's a tourist I saw for a while who must have gotten that style memo. He was tall -- maybe 6'3' -- and very large -- 350 pounds. He wore a teeny, tiny Speedo that was hidden beneath his belly. I admired him for being comfortable in his own skin. What I didn't admire was when he came into the chiringuito in the morning from the beach, and sat shirtless and in his non-existent bathing suit with his mostly exposed sweaty body sprawled on a chair. I felt like I should have disinfectant on hand in case I unwittingly sat where he or someone like him sat!

  5. That's just weird, either make a commitment to a speedo or shorts, not in between. I had to look away from the first photo

Apparently for some it's just not fashionable to wear tight-fitting bathing suits. But it IS fashionable to awkwardly stuff the legs into the underwear and then constantly restuff as it falls down.

I love living on the water. A houseboat is my fantasy, but Jerry gets seasick.

  7. Agree wholeheartedly, Mitch!
We are speedo wearers, since I was a competitive swimmer years ago. The 1st time my eyes locked on Jim was at a pool a la Speedos. Oh yes, this is my man!
Stuffing unnecessary material inside that zone just doesn't quite cut it.

So much more comfortable... and often nice to look at! Jerry wore Speedos, too, 36 years ago.

#2 took me by surprise. Came walking up while I was scanning the beach with my camera. You should have seen the front view. For me, it was simply depressing.

#2 took me by surprise, walking right in front of my camera, while I focused on the distance. He did make the blog post more fun... or at least more picturesque.

  10. Been a while since I wore a Speedo! I figure the less 'material' at the beach....the better.
Can't imagine wearing board shorts....way too much fabric for this fella!

I'm picky about the shorts I wear around town. Heavy cotton is way too warm. I can't imagine having to wear all that fabric on the beach.

    2. Back in the late 70's (geez I sound like an old geezer!! I heard that!! lol) Ron and I traveled one summer and ended up somewhere in New Hampshire .......found a lake in a state park on a very hot day. We arrived at the beach in full Speedo attire. We began to wonder what everyone was looking at! Then we began to feel bad energy rising. So we very discreetly headed to the car and left. We were very naive back then!! lol

Hmmm... A rural lake in New Hampshire in the late '70s and two guys in Speedos with no women in tow. Good you drove off. But, by the '70s in New York, I was in cut-offs at the beach. The only ones in Speedos were the lifeguards. What a world!

Minimal bathing suits used to be the norm. Wonder what fashion will dictate next year.

  14. I am sure a PhD student has written a book trying to explain, why men are afraid to show their bodies. I haven't worn a speedo in about 70 pounds.

Something I found refreshing when I spent time in Italy in the '70s was how everyone, no matter their size, wore little bathing suits. I'm still happy to see some of that here and hope this shorts trend doesn't last. One day soon, you too will be comfortable to go out in a Speedo!

  15. I think that, in France, there is some kind of rule that men have to wear Speedo-style swimwear. Definitely at pools, probably at the beach. I think that the French think it's dangerous to be in the water with all of that cloth. In the US, I know that young men the age of my students wouldn't be caught dead in anything shorter than board shorts, unless they are on the swim team, and have to wear Speedos. If one of them showed up to a party at someone's pool, with Speedos on, they would never, ever live it down.

I know bikinis and tight bathing suits were the norm in Italy when I used to go there and here until recently. I wish self-conscious teen-aged boys didn't have so much power over the fashion.
