Prune Palms / Poda De Palmeras

WHEN WE HAD our hotel in Palm Springs, California, the guy we hired to trim our palm trees would wrap his arms and legs around the trunks and shimmy up. Here, they use "cherry pickers." What a relief.

Oh, they did I'm sure. We just commonly had "shimmiers" for the local, small jobs.

  2. Funny title! Is your former hotel still in business? Sounds like a lot of work to me.

It was a ton of work and the 24-hour-a-day commitment was not for us. But we opened the first and only hotel for gays and lesbians, their children, their families and their friends. It was amazingly rewarding, although we opened just before "9/11" and went belly up after 2 years! I loved watching the guy shimmy up the tree. But my stomach was not in my throat watching this guy in the cherry picker.

The climb looked like fun (but I'd want a harness and a net).

  7. Glad to see that that bloody borer from Egypt hasn't hit the trees there yet. One of the sad things living in Italy was seeing the number of palms that were hacked down because they had imported stock from Cairo and it infested the local tree population...

It's rare to see a city palm tree suffering from that bug, although I have seen the bug itself. One flew into the living room our first year here!

I'm very careful... until I'm not! I used to use the electric hedge trimmer at the hotel until I nearly cut through the cord. We hired a gardener.
