Being "Sociale" / Estando "Sociale"

I STILL HAVE more photos from our September trip to New York. I promise you won't have to look at all of them. But I do want to share photos of some of the members of my exceptional extended family. No names to remember — well, maybe a few — but there will not be a test at the end.

Our final Sunday we had brunch in Brooklyn Heights at a great restaurant called Sociale with my wonderful Aunt Millie and a select few of her extended family (who call her GMa). Before our Sunday brunch, there had been a lunch with cousin Evie, and a dinner with cousin Jess. A week filled with good people and lots of love.

Shake Your Bombón / Agita Tu Bombón

A CAFÉ BOMBÓN is a drink that originated in Valencia, Spain. The recipe (yes, I'm providing a recipe) is equal portions of espresso and condensed milk. It doesn't appeal to me, but it's one of our friend Tynan's favorite morning blends and now I know why. See below as Tynan slowly squeezes the condensed milk from its tube.

Color My World / Colorea Mi Mundo

THESE MAY NOT all be outfits I'd wear, nor combinations I'd ... um ... combine, but I have grown to love them and I'm grateful to all these wanderers who continue to add color and contrast to my life. Unlike so much that's going on around the world, these differences don't feel to me like they're insurmountable.

Park It! / ¡Aparcarlo!

I'M SO GLAD we don't have to pay Brooklyn prices for parking. Here in Fuengirola and Málaga, we usually pay less than 1 euro for an hour (including tax).

TODAY SOME PHOTOS, mostly of Lower Manhattan from my vantage point(s) at the south end of Brooklyn Bridge Park on a beautiful day in September. I walked from our hotel through Brooklyn Heights. The views were spectacular. The Statue of Liberty was visible in New York Harbor, as was Ellis Island, where all four of my grandparents made their entrance into the United States. My sense is they were no more welcome than many current immigrants, but at least they were permitted to enter. They didn't immediately assimilate. Like most immigrants, they felt safer among people like them who spoke the languages they spoke and understood their culture. But they became citizens and their children were fully "Americans" — well, except for the fact that no one owned a gun.

The stacked, 57-story building, center in the photo below, nicknamed the Jenga Building, reminds me of a closet stacked with shoe boxes in our friend Elena's mother's house. However, unlike Elena's mother's house, prices here start at $3.5 million and soar to $50 million. How do you spell ridiculous?

Cervantes And The Pudding / Cervantes Y El Pudín

ACCORDING TO AN 18th-century translation of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote, "the proof of the pudding is in the eating." (The original Spanish is, "You will see it when you fry the eggs.") I strongly agree, especially after eating the pudding (dessert) Sunday night at our favorite restaurant in Málaga, El Mesón de Cervantes. It was my cousin Sheree's final night in Spain, and we enjoyed ourselves — Sheree especially. For her, the proof of the mojito, red wine, and Málaga wine was in the drinking, too. I don't know how she made it onto her flight early Monday morning, but I hope she slept well all the way home.

I Paid 20 Bucks For That?!?

AS I EXITED the Brooklyn Bridge walkway (click here) and crossed Park Drive into Lower Manhattan, I heard some laughter and noticed a small crowd. A group of shirtless men (some eye candy) were setting up some kind of street performance and had an entertaining patter with the crowd. I stopped to watch. They were entertaining and they collected donations before the actual act. They asked for $20, knowing they'd get less. I gave them what they asked for. I was generous because the patter was good and the money had to be shared. I'm glad I helped them make a living. However, next time I'll wait until I see what I'm paying for.

Me detuve a mirar.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, And Something / Perejil, Salvia, Romero Y Algo

I HAVE MUCH more to share from our time in New York in September, but current events (nice ones) keep redirecting my attention. This week, it's my cousin Sheree (as she says, "pronounced like the wine"). She's been doing some traveling in Europe and joined up here in Málaga with an especially charming old friend, Janet, from Hastings (south of London). They took the train to Los Boliches Friday for the day. We had lunch at Mesón Salvador. And we're meeting them again for dinner in Málaga tonight.

While Sheree played a bit on the beach, Janet and I talked nearby about the beach at Scarborough in England, where Janet went to university.

Sheree sang... loudly, "Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and WINE..."

OK, Sheree did have three glasses of wine with lunch, but she seriously thought those were the lyrics. This could explain why she and San Geraldo like each other so much (the screwed up lyrics, not the consumption of wine).
