The Love Boat

SUMMER '73: LIKE A FINE WINE,
I HOPE. BETTER WITH AGE.
In a recent conversation with an acquaintance, I was disappointed to learn how he really thinks. He said ignorant things about a particular group of fellow human beings. I told him politely that I didn't agree. I then told him why.

He did an about-face and said that people should be allowed to live their lives as they want but he then began disparaging another group. I again politely voiced my disagreement and the subject was changed. After a while, I left feeling annoyed, resentful, and angry.

I won't share the details. You have your own "Nasties" in your life and don't need to be hurt by mine.

Some people are brilliant at sniping and venting comically on their blogs. It helps them get it out of their systems. It doesn't work that way for me. I just get more angry, aggravated, and depressed.

So all I really want to tell you is no matter what difficulties or times of sadness I share with you, the stories will always be accompanied by love, humor, gratitude, and respect. I simply hope your visits here make your days a bit better. Welcome [back] to The Love Blog.

An open smile on a friendly shore...

  1. This is one of the things that I enjoy and respect about you, Mitchell. Your words and your demeanor are always pointing out positive things, and saying joyful things about your friends and your new acquaintances, and your experiences with them. Not that you are required to do that (and I doubt that I would be able to always be that kind), but, when reading your blog, I often find myself smiling and thinking to myself, "That's Mitchell, always finding the joy in his friendships."

  2. And that is why you are one of my friends :). There is so much ugly in the world right now, we need to take care of one another and not spread the nastiness

Can you believe that outfit. I was a bit of a hippy, but had to dress appropriately (HA!) for a cousin's wedding. As for that acquaintance, less time in his company in the future I think.

  5. Yes, we all have people in our lives who disparage others; it is very discouraging when it's someone you thought you knew and who you thought shared your values.

PS. I had an "afro" back when .... thankfully long hair went out of "style" some years ago. However, I must add that man-buns make me cringe.

Hate like that is not something I accept (unless it's hatred of baked beans or pickled beets).

That was my hair on a more curly day. Other times, it was just one long wave. I never had an Afro look. But, as you might have noticed, I LOVE man buns!!!

  6. Fortunately I developed a thick skin as a teenager and that has stood me in good stead so that when the obnoxious ones have a go at me. I tell them that I have been insulted by experts and if they want lessons I will teach them.

I never DID develop a very thick skin and I like your response to "the obnoxious ones." The recent exchange was not directed at me personally but I was equally offended.

  7. It is a shame that some people are so insecure or so blinded by religion that they aren't able to be accepting and compassionate. Their lives are so much poorer. Sometimes you have to cut someone loose so that they don't damage you. I'm with you - I want a permanent berth on the Love Boat.

Ooooh - you were all dressed up. What was the event?

That was for a cousin's wedding. What an get-up! Everything but the belt and tie were purchased in England that summer. I guess I thought that made it all very "fab."

  8. Peace and love all the way!!
I have found that some people put others down to build themselves up. For whatever the reason, it is such a waste to spend precious time with people like this.
Now back to the LOVE BOAT!!

This person clearly doesn't accept anything "different" from his norm. I wonder what he thought/thinks of people like me!

He has no time for prejudice and other such mind-numbingness.

  11. You're so cute and groovy.
I don't know why I loved The Love Boat ("promises something for everyone. Set a course for adventure, your mind on a new romance..." Now I'll be singing it all night. With a smile. Or maybe while vomiting). I wanted to be Julie and have her cool life. Until she had a fling with Doc. Or was it Isaac? Or both? I don't know. Woman couldn't keep a man. We're a lot alike, actually. Look what you started, Mitchell. I can't shut up.

I didn't watch enough Love Boats to know that Julie had flings! I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. Her specialty was "cruising."

Sadly, I did not enjoy my hair when I had it. As with most thing about my looks, I never thought it was good enough (although it did have its good moments). I am finally to a point in my life where I don't miss it. I like myself better with a shaved head (although a choice might be nicer than a requirement).

  14. I move blogs with a positive outlook on life to the top of my daily reading list, and others, like the attitude you encountered move down the list, until they drop off. If I let the negative in, it squeezes out the good.

I love the 70's look, later this year I will post my High School graduation picture with a current picture for comparison (40 years since I finished high school.) The hair, the clothes, I was very 1977, as a person of that age should have been at that time.

I respect that people have differing opinions. It's their right to express their opinions and if they offend me, I'll just stop following. But when someone spews hatred, I tend to let them know why I'm leaving ... and I then leave. I'll have to find some photos from 1977; that was the year after I graduated from university. I was working (or trying to get a job), so the locks were shorn!

I read the bad news online every morning and try to avoid reading it the rest of the day. But I sign petitions and write letters that make me feel like I'm doing something positive.
