My Grandfather's Style

Oh, I'm having so much fun going through the old photos we shipped back from my mother's apartment last summer. It turns out my grandfather (Sam) had already developed his eye-popping style several years before his (and my grandmother's) 66th wedding anniversary (click here if you managed to block that image from your mind or if you're simply late to the party).

Today's photo was taken more than seven years earlier, in November 1974, when my sister, Dale, and her family were in New York from Germany for a visit. My Mother The Dowager Duchess hosted a party (she loved to host parties).

At the age of 85, Grandpa Sam was something else. I wish I had that shirt — and his nerve.

SOME PEOPLE HAVE STYLE WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IT.

Hey hobo man, hey dapper Sam...

I really like the shirt... on its own.

I think the shirt on its own is kind of cool. But, whoa, with that tie!

I don't think my grandfather ever shopped for himself. So there are clearly others to blame!

He really wasn't much of a character, which makes these outfits even more surprising. Some of my younger cousins don't ever remember seeing him smile (he did at times). He was strict, serious, and authoritarian.

  5. As I get older (now 74) the brighter my clothing has become, so yes I can understand your Grandpa .

Have you read the poem “When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple” by Jenny Joseph?

  6. Ha! Even drunk I wouldn't put that shirt and tie together. That combo reminds me of something my own grandfather might have worn, along with his trademark fedora.

In earlier photos, my grandfather wore a fedora. But his suits, ties, shirts, and overcoats were classy (and un-patterned back then). Maybe if he had kept the fedora, things would have turned out differently.

I can live without "The Sun'll Come Out..." but I still love some of those Annie numbers. My favorite is "Little Girls."

If I could find that fabric, I'd send it to you and would commission a Spo shirt.

  9. Mitchell, your grandfather definitely had his own style!
Enjoy the weekend, I see you are having a sunny day.

I realized that that was probably a hand-me-down shirt from his youngest son-in-law, who always had and still has expensive and unusual taste. The tie? I can't imagine.
