Real Good Salad

San Geraldo has been doing his seasonal baking. While waiting for his lemon bars to come out of the oven the other day, he perused his mother's box of recipes once again. That can be quite entertaining. One recipe, called "Real Good Salad," has ingredients that make it the perfect side salad for a Sunday roast (or maybe not). You can decide.

Since San Geraldo decided against making "Real Good Salad," here are two of the real good things he did make.

RASPBERRY-LEMON BARS.
(CLICK HERE FOR THE RECIPE POSTED IN 2011.)
BEACON HILL BROWNIES.
(THEY LOOK SCORCHED, BUT THEY'RE NOT.)

  1. Belated season's greetings, Mitch, to you, to S.G. and (of course) to D & M - and, from the looks of it, there's still more yuminess to come. Let the happy times continue!

We really need to stop with all the yumminess. Our digestive systems have been protesting for three days. But I haven't had all my favorite Spanish holiday baked sweets. So the protest will go on! Wishing you a happy and healthy end of year. I'll wish more for 2017 when the time [soon] arrives.

  2. SG's dessert choices are SO much better than the "real yucky salad".

Well, I DO like Butterfingers, and Ritz Crackers, strawberries, and sometimes even marshmallows. Jell-o? Not much. All together? Yuck is right!

  5. You are being spoiled in the treat area I see! So much chocolate and treats in this house...think we might have salad for super to counteract it all.

They're Lemon Bars. Homemade shortbread topped with raspberry jam and then lemon custard. SO good!

The salad ingredients seem a little weird, but the baking looks delicious!

  8. I remember the jello salads from growing up in Michigan, cherry jello, crushed pineapple, and ready whip was my grandmother's go to quick salad. The baking looks wonderful, we are enjoying my fruitcake.

Jerry loves to tell related the rules of Jell-o. This flavor with this fruit and never with that. But I never heard the rule about what flavor Jell-o got Ritz Crackers and Butterfingers. I love fruitcake, unlike so many people. The closest we got this year was Jerry's Jamaican Black Cake. So delicious.

  9. I'm trying to figure out the butter fingers, cos things called butter fingers her are shortbreads! I think I might like your version better, having a sweet tooth 'n all. Although I wouldn't want either in a "real good salad."
Am enjoying a long distance brownie.

I do love American Butterfingers, but don't think I could stomach this recipe. Butterfingers are described as "a crispy core of creamy peanut butter blended with sugar candy in chocolatey coating." I'm craving another brownie but am so glad we brought the entire tray to Tynan and Elena's... and left it there! (Apparently, there's nothing left.)

  11. If you and San Geraldo don't know the song "Lime Jell-O Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise," by William Bolcom, you should. Here it is, as performed by him and his wife, Joan Morris: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tWuG2oPL3o

Ha! I was told about this some time back when I wrote about another of Jerry's family's famous Jell-O desserts. This made me laugh all over again.
