Smurf Sandwich / Tostada Pitufo

La versión español está después de San Geraldo.

MOST MORNINGS, WE go across the street to the chiringuito for coffee on the beach. I use the word "mornings" loosely. We're usually up by 8:30 but we have breakfast at home and we sometimes don't get out for coffee until noon.

Thursdays, however, our housekeeper, Isabel, arrives at 10 and we like to be out of her way. The chiringuito doesn't open until 11, so we go to Mesón Salvador (for much better coffee).

We also treat ourselves to tostadas when we're there. We have our choice of large (viena) or small (pitufo, which is what a Smurf is called in Spain).

I have Serrano ham (a type of dry-cured ham from the Sierra Nevada Mountains) and cheese (with olive oil). Exquisite. San Geraldo opts for butter and jam.

Exquisito. San Geraldo opta por mantequilla y mermelada.

MY PITUFO / MI PITUFO.
SAN GERALDO TOLD MANUEL "A LOT" OF BUTTER AND JAM. HE BROUGHT IT ALL.
SAN GERALDO DIJO A MANUEL, "MUCHO" MANTEQUILLA Y MERMELADA.
HE DIDN'T NEED AS MUCH AS HE REMEMBERED.
ÉL NO NECESITABA TANTO COMO LO RECORDABA.
THE TIME BEFORE. HE HAD MISTAKENLY ORDERED A VIENA.
LA VEZ ANTERIOR. ÉL HABíA PEDIDO EQUIVOCAMENTE UNA VIENA.
HOW COULD WE FORGET HE'S A PITUFO?
¿CÓMO PODRÍAMOS OLVIDAR QUE ÉL ES UN PITUFO?

    1. Maddie,
Isn’t it amazing what he lets me get away with? And always with a laugh. I think he just likes any kind enough f attention. Manuel is exceptional. We bumped into him on the Paseo earlier today... with his wife (also unbelievably charming) and their 9-month-old son!

  5. Could S.G. start a trend? - kitchen towel on head. One trusts they aren't then used for the purpose they were made.

    1. Ray,
I had to buy entirely different kitchen towels for the actual kitchen. HE would have switched them back and forth.

  7. Thought he saw a fly, huh? Smurf Geraldo, there is no need to make excuses for your fashion statements!
It took me a quick minute to realize he was holding a fan and not some weird, exotic vegetable imported from Kenya or something. I've learned so much about food here.
On a more prurient note, I'd love to squeeze Adrian's lemons.

To swear in Spanish, you’d have to say what the pitufo.

  12. Oh my. That pitufo with the cured ham looks most tasty. The blue pitufo looks like, well, a not-so-cured ham! ;)
