Hi Ya!!! / ¡¡¡Hola Ya!!!

OUR FRIENDS PEDRO and Kathleen (and their son Luke) were away for the summer. We finally re-connected Sunday at Primavera (on their anniversary). Luke, who will be two in November, is bilingual. He understands everything said to him in both Spanish and English; and he became much more verbal during their summer away. Luke has never said my name. When he wanted my attention Sunday night (which he wanted non-stop), he would simply say "hi ya." When I didn't respond, "hi ya" got louder. And louder. Until one of his parents would tell him to stop.

I kept trying to get him to say my name. His response, "Uh, no." He finally did say my name a few times. Mish or Meeshoe. I loved it. But he preferred, "Hi Ya!!!!!"

Él finalmente dijo mi nombre unas cuantas veces. Mish o Meeshoe. Me encantó. Pero a él prefería, "¡Hi Ya!"

  4. What a cutie pie. I bet he gets away from calling anyone "Hi ya" whilst yanking their hair off. Good thing you don't have any to spare, Mitchell.
    Thanks for this happy post.

Smart ass! I asked Luke if he liked MY haircut. He stared blankly for a moment and then slowly nodded his head. (Like, 'OK, I'll go along with this.')

  6. I bet you missed them. Think of the fashion statement if you could get stickers in plaid and stripes for the complete look.

We really, really missed them. So happy they're back before we head for a little bit. I'm sure I could find plaid and striped stickers!

Luke has grown so much and that haircut really changed his appearance dramatically. He is still so sweet and fun, and amazingly well-behaved.

  9. I always wondered what it would be like to understand two languages at such an early age

It's fascinating to watch him. He understands everything that's said, no matter what language. I hadn't known that it's common for bilingual kids to become verbal a bit later than other kids, because they have so much information to process. I had a friend whose kids grew up bilingual and knew when to speak French and when to speak English before the age of 2. It was fascinating.
