EXCEPT FOR CARVING pumpkins, I'm not big on Halloween. And since Halloween is not a traditionally Spanish holiday, I've mostly tried to ignore it completely in recent years. However, our favorite local restaurant, Mesón Salvador, decided to for the first time host their own Halloween celebration. A special, fixed price menu (with macabre themes), costumes, and fun. How could we refuse? So, we went with Tynan and Elena. We didn't have enough time to get our acts together to go in costume.
Elena, being a mother to teen-agers, said she would just go as herself — the witch. Tynan decided he would go as a middle-aged man, which was quite a stretch — for the middle-aged man. I had thought of going as a local British tourist but decided I didn't want to insult anyone (in person, at least; I've probably insulted several British tourists reading my blog). And San Geraldo wanted to go as a dowager duchess — not My Mother THE Dowager Duchess, just your run-of-the-mill (manor?) dowager duchess.

***Oops! I translated host as "hostia." Hostia is the name for the white communion wafer (which Americans call the "host"). However, "hostia" is commonly used as a swear word in Spanish and can replace the word "fuck" in many phrases. As I said, Oops! Apologies to our hosts!

Scary fun.

DeleteWe had the best time. And to think we almost didn't go!
It looks fun, like the shots.
ReplyDeleteCheapchick:
DeleteI have no idea what was in the shots but they were delicious.
Love the shot glasses.
ReplyDeleteKirk:
DeleteSpecialty drinks are David's creations (the David in the final photo). He outdid himself with these.
I love this! Outstanding food, drinks and costumes! We adults need to make more space in our lives for goofy fun like this. It's good for us!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteI plan to go in costume next year. This should give us enough time.
FUN FUN FUN!!!!
ReplyDeleteJim:

DeleteThey did a great job, had a ball, and worked their butts off. They always work hard but they did this all day and all night. I've never seen them run around so much. And still always time for a smile or a laugh. An amazing team.
What a fun way to celebrate Halloween.
ReplyDeleteStephen:
DeleteI can't remember a better time on Halloween. I'm even looking forward to next year.
Hey, Mitchell, the Spanish teacher at my school had big Dia de los Muertos parties in all of her classes today! A grand time was had by all. :)
ReplyDeleteJennifer:
DeleteWe don't have Día De Los Muertes celebrations here, but Wednesday, All Saint's Day, was a holiday. I love the Mexican art!
I am also not a Halloweener, hehe weiner, but I did like the food and drink you all had!
ReplyDeleteBob:
DeleteThis was the first time I really enjoyed a Halloween night. You should plan to attend next year. It might change your attitude.
I always heard that Halloween is rather non-existent in Europe, I'm glad to see the spooky stuff still happen regardless.
ReplyDeleteAdam:
DeleteIt's gotten pretty big in many parts of Great Britain and they (the British expats) have helped to popularize it here. I was put off by it at first because it's not traditionally Spanish but, well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
What? Nobody went as a virgin?!!
ReplyDeleteWalt the Fourth:
DeleteThere was a Cardinal Zombie and a Nun Zombie but I don't know if either of them were really virgins (although they're supposed to be).
Looks like fun was had by all. Keep having fun,
ReplyDeleteTravel:
DeleteThat's the goal.
Looks like a great time! The restaurant went all out. Glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteRobin:
