Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow / Pelo Hoy, Desaparecen Mañana

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

I TRIM MY hair and beard myself with an electric trimmer. Lately, I've been setting the trimmer at the shortest setting when I trim the hair on my head. I set it at the fourth setting down from the longest for my beard. Sunday, I trimmed my head and then reset the trimmer for my beard. I took one swipe from under my chin to the right side of my mustache and said, "Oh shit." Instead of the fourth setting from the longest, I had clicked it to the fourth setting from the shortest. So, I'm now clean-shaven. Although I've been told (and I agree) that I look a lot younger without the beard, I've also been told (and I agree) that I perhaps look better with it. But I've decided, at this moment at least, to opt for younger. Interestingly (or maybe not), my buzz-cut style began nearly 20 years ago when I was trimming my hair and had the setting wrong. Oops. I guess I'll never learn. See what you think of the new look (But, be kind. Always be kind.)

P.S.: Did you know that selfies actually make your nose look up to 30 percent bigger? I know my nose is not a button, but I'm always surprised by how big it looks in selfies. Now I know.

Ahora entiendo.

MY INITIAL REACTION AS I LOOKED IN THE MIRROR.
MI REACCIÓN INICIAL CUANDO ME MIRÉ EN EL ESPEJO.
THE TRUTH: THE "INITIAL REACTION" SHOT IS NOT RECENT. BUT CAN YOU TELL US APART?
LA VERDAD: LA FOTO DE "REACCIÓN INICIAL" NO ES RECIENTE. PERO, ¿PUEDES DISTINGUIRNOS?

  2. To be honest.....you do look younger without the beard. But I also like the beard as well. How's THAT for an answer!! You really haven't changed much since infancy.

I've gotten used to it. Although, with the beard, I could go 3 days without trimming around the edges and I still looked presentable. Clean-shaven really asks for every day renewal. I'm trying to get by with every other day. We'll see how long this lasts. My one consistent trait is that I can be very inconsistent.

I was only 3 months old; I didn't know any better. Oh, wait, I see what you mean...

  5. I don't think you look younger with or without the beard, just different. I prefer the beard. You look sexy, handsome and distinguished with it. Not that you are dog food without it. My compliments suck! I don't take selfies, but, my mirror makes me look a whole lot fatter than what my mind says I am.

When I was working at UC San Diego, I mentioned to colleagues that i was thinking of growing a beard again (they had never seen me with one). One person said, "Oh, I think you'd look really distinguished!" I put off growing it for another month because, "When the hell did I get old enough to look distinguished?!?" (But it's 20 years later... so OK.)

  6. One time I had grabbed the wrong clipper on the electric hair cutter and boom...I was a faux leukemia victim

Ew, sad image but I get the idea. Jerry said he himself looked like Uncle Fester the one time he did it (in solidarity with his mother during her chemo treatments).

  7. I prefer the bearded look, but you are still (almost) as cute as the shot on the right. I use clippers on the back and sides of my hair with the longest attachment. The good thing about hair is that it grows back - until it doesn't!

Exactly. Until it doesn't. The top of my head is sparse. The beard still grows like crazy. Four days and I've got a stubble beard again. But right now I'm shaving every two days.

  8. Oh maaaaan, I wish I had seen the look on your face when you made that first swipe. Ha! But, you OF COURSE look great either way. And, the wonderful thing about the facial hair, is that you can grow it back!

I've done this so often that I simply say, "Oh, shit!" and laugh. Four days without shaving and the beard would be back as one of those trendy stubble beards. I'm holding off. Enjoying the change. i just might have to wear bolder earrings!

  9. I like you with or without the beard, but it's a nice change (accident meant to be) even just while you grow it back. Love the baby pics. Mine have tape on the top of my head where Mom stuck a bow to indicate I was a girl as I was as bald as you were (you can see the tape - for real)

I used to shave and grow and restyle and shave and do it all over again regularly. Now that I shave (to stubble) my head, and don't find it very interesting when I let THAT grow I tend to keep the beard longer. I feel like there needs to be SOMETHING of interesting above the neck. Maybe I'll get one of those hair tattoos.

Oh, OK, I won't then! But only 'cause you said.

  10. Haha! My husband does the same thing with his hair/beard....the shortest possible clip for his head and a slightly longer one for his beard. I'll have to show him this post. The only time I've seen him beardless was when he was having chemotherapy, and while it did make him look younger, I think I prefer the beard. Same with you! Although you look good either way. :)

Thanks! Jerry shaved his head when his mother was having chemotherapy. He got off the plane and she was waiting for him -- with her full head of hair. She said, "What did you DO?!?" He's a handsome guy with an amazing head of hair. Thank god! When he shaved, our friend said he looked like Uncle Fester.

If this is all it takes to look younger, that's fine with me. No further than this for me, though. Although I really did like the Halloween rock star wigs I tried on.

I'm so used to the beard that it takes me days to get used to my face without it. I'm now adjusting but will soon get bored and grow the beard back!

  16. I love the initial reaction photo. Hair today, gone tomorrow, wear what makes you comfortable. (I have a draft posting about hair - some place around here.) You do look younger without the beard, but there is nothing wrong with looking our age. I debate getting rid of my beard, I grew it in 2014 with plans to keep it for a couple of months.

I love change and after a brief "Oh, shit!," I always laugh when I do this (and I've done it often enough that I couldn't tell you how many times). I can't remember when I grew the most recent beard. I have been beardless in Fuengirola and we've been here 5 years.

Aw, thanks. I WAS a cute baby wasn't I? My mother used to sing "BUT baby look at you now" instead of "'CAUSE baby look at you now." So far, I'm sticking with clean-shaven.

  18. Hate shaving, but got rid of my goat. If I have nowhere special to go I skip the daily shave. At 70 I'm invisible anyhow.
