Where Hipsters Shop / Donde Compran Los Hipsters

IN YESTERDAY'S POST, I showed you some things I didn't buy. I never told you about some of the things I did buy when we were in New York in September. I bought a six-pack of gourmet ginger ale (to be consumed while there), not realizing that "gourmet" meant it didn't have a twist-off cap. That's the reason for the first item. The shop, on Smith Street, is called Exit 9 Gift Emporium and I could have filled a suitcase. It's supposedly where "the hipsters of Brooklyn" shop.

A THUMB RING, BOTTLE OPENER.
UN ANILLO DE PULGAR, ABREBOTELLAS.
CORTAUÑAS (NAIL CLIPPERS).
BEE EARRINGS. BECAUSE I'M ALLERGIC TO THE REAL THING (BEES, NOT EARRINGS).
ARETES DE ABEJAS. PORQUE SOY ALÉRGICO A LAS COSAS REALES (ABEJAS, NO ARETES).

  1. I am disappointed to find out the spanish word of hipsters is hipsters. This would not do in French.

I was also disappointed. But you DO have to say it with a Spanish accent.

  2. Bee earrings are very nice.
Ring is also perfect for those moments of flipping off a metal cap or your middle finger.
    Nail clippers in copper wow!

I bought the nail clippers for the novelty and they've turned out to be the best I've ever had. I used the thumb ring for one of those bottles of ginger ale. That's it!

There was so much that I wanted and had no need for. I wouldn't mind going back, though.

  5. I love the nail clippers! The important thing though, do they work? The earrings are cute. I hope you didn't have to pay a whole lot for ginger ale that is harder to open.

The clippers are the best I've ever had. The ginger ale was delicious but was made from real ginger and would settle out so that it had to be shaken gently. Even so, it left sediment that was kind of disgusting (to me at least). So, I drank one bottle and left the rest in the hotel fridge... which made it even more expensive than it already was... and add that $3.50 thumb ring to the bill!

  6. I think I have heard of this shop.

At our store, they have a whole millennial/hipster shop, targeting that base. It's filled with all kinds of odd and stylist do dads. They seem to have very weird taste on things. Like why one need a cell phone charger in the shape of a heart of poodle I couldn't tell you. But the music tees are cool. I myself bought the Amy Winehouse one.

I wouldn't buy a charger in the shape of a poodle... but I might think about it for a moment.

Ha! If they're attracted to me, I'm probably allergic to them, too. (But I love you!)

  9. I guess my views of Brooklyn were shaped by The Honeymooners and Brighton Beach Memoirs. I didn't know it has hipsters(unless you're being sarcastic.)

Brooklyn has always been more than it's reputation (and equal to its reputation, as well, unfortunately). Brooklyn Heights and areas nearby were cool even in the '70s. But in recent years, much of Brooklyn has become very trendy and chic... and absurdly expensive. So, yeah, I was serious about the hipsters.

  10. The world needs more shops filled with interesting and offbeat things we want but don't really need. The best places to shop.

I need nothing, but can spend hours (and money) in these shops. I was in that shop several times (possibly every time I passed it going from the subway to our hotel). There was one in San Diego when we lived there called Babette Schwartz (owned by a drag queen of that name). A blast!
