OUR FIRST MORNING in Washington DC, we went out for breakfast. We had coffee and omelettes. The coffee was passable. The omelettes were delicious. With tip, breakfast cost us $60! San Geraldo has picked up bagels every morning since. I've been enjoying Chesapeake Bay crabs just about every day, too. (And, no, I have NEVER had those other "crabs"!)
THE COFFEE? SO SO. EL CAFÉ? ASÍ ASÍ. |
OUR $60 BREAKFAST. NUESTRO DESAYUNO DE $60. |

Glad you got crabs! So-so coffee is not a good way to start the day.

DeleteI was so happy to get back to the chiringuito yesterday morning. I've become very particular about my coffee.
Did they serve the coffee in bowls in DC?? I have only ever seen that in France (in homes, not restaurants).
ReplyDeleteThat makes me wonder about España.. do people drink their morning, at home, coffee from bowls, mugs, or cups?
Judy:
DeleteThe restaurant was Le Pain Quotidien, so French coffee bowls I guess. Too bad it wasn't decent French coffee. Here coffee is supped from either a glass or a coffee cup. We get ours in a glass... and then pour it over a larger glass of ice this time of year!
I know where you can have a really great $25 cheeseburger in DC (Bobby Vans Steakhouse,)
ReplyDeleteTravel:
DeleteThat's not a bad price given what we experienced. But too late now. We had GREAT burgers in Brooklyn (under $10!!!) at 282, which is at 282 Atlantic Avenue.
My breakfast in DC was a box of poptarts I got at Target.
ReplyDeleteIt does seem like chain restaurants in DC were reasonable, but the standalone unique ones were pretty steep
Adam:
DeleteWe should have hit the chains... although we would have missed out on some amazing meals, I suppose.
that $60 breakfast was worth $30 tops.
ReplyDeleteDC has always been hella expensive.
CRABS! I LOVE CRABS (but not THAT kind of "crabs")!
anne marie:
DeleteI too love crabs but not THAT kind of crabs. I do remember meals being expensive in the '80s when we lived there.
I disagree with AM -- something I rarely do -- but that breakfast looks like a ten dollar meal.
ReplyDeleteNow, that crabcake sammich? Um ....yum!
Bob:
DeleteFor DC, it was a $30 breakfast. The omelette was excellent. I love crabs (not THOSE kind) and crab cakes. I was in crab heaven.
A $60 breakfast should have excellent coffee. Good idea on the bagels!
ReplyDeleteJennifer:
DeleteI agree. I might not have minded so much if the coffee had been up to par.
$60 Breakfast and only so so coffee ?
ReplyDeletecheers, parsnip
Parsnip:
DeleteAnd we are so spoiled when it comes to coffee. Their coffee had that watery, sharp, metallic taste.
It all looks delicious, but I could never get over having crabs first thing in the morning.
ReplyDeletemistress maddie:
DeleteI didn't have crabs first thing in the morning. I mean I didn't have crabs at all. Well I did. But not like that. Anyway, a crab omelette is delicious.
Still don't understand how they get all that meat out of those tiny legs.......
ReplyDeleteWillym:
DeleteThat sounds like a cooking question.
Not a fan of any kind of crabs!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteOh, I love Chesapeake Bay crabs, Alaskan King crabs... any of the edible kind as a matter of fact.
The average American restaurant can be so mediocre: what might be a delicious crab sandwich - but then put it on a McDonald's bread container with a side of frozen French fries. The pizza looks really good, however. Hope it tasted as good. Unless I want to blow a whole month's Social Security on a meal here, in nearby Santa Fe, I am generally at a loss for a decent meal out...99% of restauranteurs require every entree to be "smothered in green chile" for it to be marketable. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteFrank:
Delete| have to say, everything pictured was excellent. We were very lucky with restaurants this trip... even if we sometimes paid through the nose. So glad Fuengirola still has great food and low prices. I wonder how long THAT will last.
Thanks for settling that confusion about crabs. For a second there, I thought there might be a huge orgy going on in the Chesapeake Bay.
ReplyDeleteKirk:
DeleteI'm sure there must be at least ONE orgy going on at any given moment in the Chesapeake Bay. I've just never been invited.
Crabs? Ick on both edible and nonedible. A $60 breakfast should come with a lap dance and Broadway tune from a cute waiter or waitress (I'm not picky).
ReplyDeleteDeedles:
DeleteOur waiter WAS cute, too. I should have demanded a lap dance!
@bob - I took into consideration DC prices, but still...RTG and I can easily spend $30 for both of us for breakfast in philly.
ReplyDeleteanne marie:
DeleteYep. I agreed with you on that score. Remember, Bob lives in Smallville.
