I DON'T KNOW why IHOP (International House of Pancakes) is called "international." It's the name of a chain of American restaurants that first opened in 1958 and specialized at that time in breakfast.
One opinion I've read (by someone who states it as fact) is that they called themselves "international" because they served "French fries and Swedish crepes with lingonberries," "exotic foods from Europe." However, I don't think they served French fries (which, anyway, are only called such in the USA) and Swedish crepes with lingonberries when they opened.
I tired of IHOP in the '70s, finding their food inferior and their servings too small for my teen-age appetite. I've since changed my mind. We've taken The Kid Brother to the one in Coney Island two years in a row, and we've really enjoyed our meals.
For me, this year's Belgian Dark Chocolate Pancakes may have had something to do with it. Finally, exotic food from Europe!

EXOTIC FOOD FROM EUROPE. COMIDA EXÓTICA DE EUROPA. |

AND OF COURSE THERE WAS THE KID BROTHER'S STRAWBERRY SUNDAE. Y POR SUPUESTO ESTABA EL "SUNDAE DE HELADO" CON FRESAS Y JARABE DE FRESAS DE EL HERMANITO. |
I haven't been to a IHOP in a age. There's a little French eatry in New Hope that makes, excellent pancakes though. Those dark Belgian up there look nightly good though.......

DeleteI'm not usually big on pancakes (except for Jerry's apple cinnamon pancakes, which he hasn't made in ages), but these chocolate ones were REALLY good.
@maddie - there's an IHOP in mah hood, gurl! but they don't serve gin with pancakes!
ReplyDeleteanne marie:
DeleteIHOP BYOB.
My sweet bear loves IHOP. I have never seen the attraction of pancakes. I have grown to love eating breakfast out.
ReplyDeleteTravel:
DeleteI don't always enjoy pancakes; I find they get pasty as they cool... except for Jerry's apple cinnamon pancakes... and dark Belgian chocolate pancakes!
The pancakes look great! ;) Can one really go wrong with Belgian chocolate? I think probably not.
ReplyDeleteSnoskred:
DeleteIt was all about the chocolate.
I'll have what the Kid brother is having.
ReplyDeleteBob:
DeleteStrawberries and vanilla ice cream. Unlike me, he hates chocolate.
My gawd, that is the KING of sundaes!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteYep, it was a generous serving.
KB has such focus. That is probably an asset for skeeball.
ReplyDeleteWilma:
DeleteHe DOES obsess.
Oh my heavens! Those all look sooooo good!
ReplyDeleteJudy:
DeleteI actually look forward to our IHOP meal now!
We have IHOP in Canada, maybe that is why the "International" so Elite lol. Pancakes are one of my favorite food items and I am a fan of IHOP. Unfortunately we don't have one near us (I feel like petitioning the town to invite them in, a town full of seniors and pancakes all day and you can't go wrong). Whenever we go to a city with them hubby knows we have to go to IHOP for breakfast. Your brother has good taste. French toast is a close 2nd though

DeleteI like the Canada theory; that's why New York's Rochester airport was always called international -- it flew 15 minutes to Canada. But the first and only IHOP opened in California, so so much for that theory! When we arrived at IHOP that day, it was mobbed. Couldn't figure it out. It was a weekday. 60 cent pancake Friday! I'll never do THAT again.
Love the crepes with lingonberry butter !
ReplyDeleteHave not had them in a long time.
cheers, parsnip and badger
Parsnip:
DeleteI've never had a crepe at an IHOP.
Dark chocolate pancakes! Would love to try those!
ReplyDeleteJim:
DeleteOh, they're worth trying.
You're an international tease, Mitchell. One of these days...I'm going to show up at your doorstep and expect to be taken on the chocolate circuit of my life.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I ever liked about IHOP is that they have many different flavors of syrup.
Robyn:
DeleteI'm not a big syrup fan (Jerry fills a bowl with syrup and then adds pancakes).
I see that Chuck can eat whatever he wants without gaining weight, just like you. Lucky!!
ReplyDeleteI like the spinach omelet at IHOP. With a big stack of pancakes on the side dripping butter!
Jennifer:
DeleteHe's so hyper, he burns off most of what he eats. But he has gotten a bit pear-shaped in recent years.
I enjoy IHOP, only for breakfast, sometimes lunch, never dinner. We live a hop, skip and a jump away from one. They almost know us by name. If you have a sweet tooth, their stuffed French toast is pretty good. It doesn't taste French toasty, so I can eat it with pleasure.
ReplyDeleteDeedles:
DeleteI've only ever had breakfast at IHOP. Stuffed French toast sounds wonderful. Oh how I wish I had a sweet tooth (snort).
And "French toast" is not called that in France. Probably only in North America.
ReplyDeleteWalt the Fourth:
DeleteAnd then there are English muffins, about which English people haven't a clue. Hmmm... I wonder about Spanish fly.
I believe it's called IHOB now, the International House of Bullshit
