He Was Framed! / ¡Le Ha Culpado!

La versión español está después de las dos primeras foto.

LOOKING AROUND OUR living room lately, I decided it had become quite a hodgepodge with the addition of my mother's furniture, knick knacks, and family photos slapped on the walls. I needed a change. I always need a change.

One of the things we shipped back from New York two years ago after my mother died was a large oil painting she had done in 1962. It was framed in 1964 and hung on the living room wall for the next 54 years.

After I removed all the family photos from the walls and modernized things a bit, we decided it was time to update the frame on my mother's painting, too. I wanted something simpler, lighter and with cleaner lines to coordinate with the even larger water color on the opposite wall. I then decided to flop the paintings. What's next?

And, speaking of framing: When we were at Nathan's with the Kid Brother, I reminded him of last year when we saw the New York City cops having lunch and they came over and told him they'd been looking for him ever since his wanted poster went up in the precinct (because our friend Judy asked them to do it). The Kid Brother smiled and said again, "I was framed!" (click here)

THE FRAME FROM 1964.
EL CUADRO DE 1964.
AND NOW.
Y AHORA.

The Kid Brother sonrió y dijo: "¡Me ha culpado!" (haz clic aquí)

2013.
A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER. TOO DARK AND IT DIDN'T DRAW YOUR VIEW TO THE SEA.
UNOS AÑOS DESPUÉS. DEMASIADO OSCURO Y NO ATRAJO LA VISTA AL MAR.
AND NOW... ANOTHER PHASE?
Y AHORA... ¿OTRA FASE?

BEGINNING.
AL PRINCIPIO.
MIDDLE.
LA MITAD.
NOW.
AHORA.

  1. I enjoy changing things up learning it from Jim many years ago.
One small wall in the kitchen will be updated with geometric wallpaper because the pears are getting on my nerves.
Soon it will change very soon.
Evolution in change is interesting eh!

I have always loved rearranging things. Jerry has, too, but I can be extreme. Lately, he's just letting me go. And, I'm like you, things start to "get on my nerves."

We've done dramatic color in some other places. Liked it at first here. But we have a breathtaking view of the sea with natural light from dawn til dusk. The dark marble floors along with the dark walls drew your attention away from the view. Much happier now. Would love to tear out walls and change everything, but that's not going to happen!

  3. Looks like you got both the view to the sea and quite a bit of sunlight in that one photo.

We have the sun from when it rises until it sets. it was a shame to distract from that and the view, I decided. Would love to do more, but this may be it for a little while -- until I get a bug again and can't control myself.

  4. the frame change REALLY brings out your mother's painting; in the "before" pix the focus was the frame. LOVE the lighter walls. did moose & dudo help you re-arrange things?

We always thought that old frame complemented the painting and didn't appreciate how much it overpowered it. My mother would love it. Moose and Dudo followed me around while I worked... even while I drilled holes. Other times, like if I drop a pen on the floor, they're off like a shot.

Thanks. I'd be really happy if the space was about 1/2 again as large! Never satisfied.

  6. Personally I like color, especially the green and gold but with the purple/eggplant it looks a bit like MardiGras. Which is not a bad combo. We've been putting off interior painting - hate the disruption and mess.

We both love bold color, which is why we did it. Have had a lot of fun in the past in much larger spaces. The view made me want to go back to mostly light. The color distracted from the view and also reduced the natural light that we're so lucky to have.

I am pleased. I feel like the place finally looks a bit more like "us." Would love a new sofa and chairs... and maybe 400 sf more of space!

  8. Well, I loved the old wall colors, but it had gotten too heavy and dark with all your "new" additions. The white walls really set things off nicely. And the new frame on the painting, plus moving it to the purple wall is wonderful. All in all the atmosphere is lighter, fresher, more carefree while staying full of character. How long did this transformation take?

That's the way I felt. We both really loved the colors when we first did them; although the green wasn't quite what I had intended. I had all the colors except purple painted out over two "mood changes" last year. The walls are a light parchment color. I had since hung a bunch of family photos on the walls of the living room. Those all came down last week. Then the frame (which I dropped off one day and picked up the next!).

  9. We tend to put things in the perfect place and leave them there forever, we should change things up- looks great!
