No, It's Not Flamenco / No, No Es Flamenco

La versión español está después de la versión inglés.

SEVILLANA IS THE traditional Spanish dance that is thought to have its beginnings in 15th-century Castilla in the heart of Spain. The strictly choreographed Sevillana, which is not supposed to be performed solo, is very different from Flamenco, an improvised, expressive dance.

Our friend Pedro teaches Sevillana to his high school students as part of their cultural education. He's a great dancer and teacher. San Geraldo and I were at Pedro and Kathleen's house for dinner and Sevillana the other night with two other friends, Nicole and Diego. San Geraldo and I watched the Sevillana lesson because there really wasn't enough room for our flailing arms and legs. But we can't wait to learn more. Pedro's lesson plan is inspired. This year's is based on the game of football (soccer) and the celebration after the game.

I loved to dance when I was a kid. Lost the ease and spontaneity, but it's coming back.

  4. I'd find Pedro just too distracting in demonstrating dancing moves. He'd certainly have my attention, but not for the reason he thinks. Kathleen might be a more 'suitable' demonstrator if she has the 'it' factor which he clearly does.

Btw: I might have missed it, but have you been deliberately silent on the Catalonia issue? (If you've covered it, I apologise.) It's been leading and dominating our news bulletins for several days now. I'm simply curious about your own and S.G.'s attitudes - that is only if you WANT to talk about it!

Yes, Pedro IS distracting. So's Kathleen... if you like that sort of thing. I try to avoid serious political discussions on my blog, which is why I haven't mentioned Catalonia. I don't support the arguments for independence. But I think Rajoy handled the vote badly and made the issue much worse, since the majority of Catalonians do not support independence. Catalonian leadership just published a list of statistics to support independence and most of the numbers were either misrepresented or flat out lies. I think Rajoy got advice from Trump!

    2. Thanks for that, Mitch. I never knew which side of the fence to come down on. I think I'll stay sitting there a while longer - facing the 'no' side.

  9. "Pedro's Hake." Sounds like some deep, dark novel, soon to be a film with Daniel Day Lewis and Meryl Streep.

The original Spanish title "La Merluza de Pedro" has the same sound. Maybe Javier Bardem and Salma Hayek?
