Changing A Light Bulb / Cambiando Una Bombilla

I DECIDED TO walk home from the orthodontist Monday evening because I would pass City Hall on my way home. There's a large Christmas ball that you can walk through. Sadly, when I got there, the openings were blocked off, one end by plastic tape and the other by a truck. There was a guy on a "cherry picker" (hydraulic crane) replacing a light bulb. OK, he was replacing an entire section of lights, but it made me think of the never-ending series of American light bulb jokes.

I just read through about a hundred or so light bulb jokes and didn't find them very funny. Despite that, here are a couple:

Question: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: Only one. But the bulb has got to really want to change.

Question: How many Jewish mothers does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: None. Why worry about me? I'll just sit in the dark.

Respuesta: Ninguna. ¿Por qué preocuparse por mí? Me sentaré en la oscuridad.

HOW MANY CITY WORKERS DOES IT TAKE TO SCREW IN A LIGHT BULB?
¿CUÁNTOS TRABAJADORES DE LA CIUDAD SE NECESITAN PARA CAMBIAR UNA BOMBILLA?

My Jewish mother would have said (and did), "You need to change that bulb. Now! And put in a stronger one. I will NOT sit in the dark."

I hope I never take them for granted. They're still like magic to me; and they do something different every year.

  4. Oy, I'm fine in the dark. It's peaceful.

Other than that I would not want to be on lightbulb duty this time of year!

Neither would I. I sometimes take a month to change a lightbulb at home.

  5. Again I am reminded of the incredible light displays we saw in Madrid back in 2010 - these are as beautiful and speak to the artistry of the country. Thank you for sharing.

I had never seen city displays as extravagant until moving to Spain. And they do something different year. It lights up my life.

  6. Ahhhh haaaaa haaaa! Thanks for the chuckle, and for the delights to the eye that your Christmas lights are, over there in far-away Fuengirola land.

I told it to my mother some years back. She didn't find it amusing.

  10. Fun lights. I had a NASA engineer explain to me why it cost $500 and took three people to change a light bulb in a hallway on a launch platform. The electrician confirms the bulb is burned out, physical plant sets up the ladder, the electrician dismantles the fixture, janitorial cleans the fixture, the electrician changes the bulb and resembles the fixture, physical plant removes the ladder, and janitorial comes back to sweep up. $500 was in the 1970's, it has to be three times that today.

I'm a strong believer in unions and labor laws... but put when you put those laws in the hands of idiots, that's what happens.
