He's A Rock Star / Él Es Una Estrella De Rock

ON A WALK along the beach Thursday, I came upon a man patiently creating eight delicately balanced cairns. When he finished, he knocked them all down. I want to thank him for sharing the joy of simply "doing."

DUDO STILL WATCHING THE BIRDS. SIMPLY FOR THE JOY OF "DOING."
DUDO TODAVÍA MIRANDO A LOS PÁJAROS. SIMPLEMENTE POR LA ALEGRÍA DE "HACER".

  2. There is a guy from Spain who visits the campground I go to in the summer who builds these same sculptures. But he keeps them up. People always wonder how they got there, or if there is a cult nearby. Pretty funny.

I wouldn’t be happy knocking them down. But they could hurt someone if they fell unexpectedly and their even less permanent on the beach.

I loved that he simply enjoying building them. No legacy needed. Anyway, I’m sure he was thinking about safety. Those would hurt if they fell on you..

  4. "the Joy of Doing" - we never stop playing - only the toys change

His toys reverted to a simpler, cheaper age.

  5. Sometimes the fun in creating something is to enjoy it and then knock it down.

    1. Bob,
That might be something for me to learn... in terms of art at least. I seem to live that way!

  6. Your cats have the fine art of "doing" well-down - a good lesson to us all. Love that you caught all the cairns up for us.

    1. Sillygirl,
Right now I’m practicing doing nothing with the cats. They’re doing a better job of it.

    1. Adam,
No, I like that the doing was what mattered. Also, they could be dangerous for kids and anyone else who came along. They’d become even less stable very quickly.

  8. Better he knock them down than someone else. Likely why he did it

  9. Not all art needs to last, like those sand mandalas Tibetan monks create. Beautiful yet temporary.

And the hours spent on those impermanent Mandela’s amazes me.
