Another Drink On Me / Tomaté Otra Copa

WHEN I WAS a kid, an aunt and uncle (my godparents) had a bar in their basement. I thought it was the coolest place in the world and was always down there pretending to be a bar tender — or a drunk. That bar inspired me to set some goals and I became an expert drinker just a few years later.  I have since returned to amateur status. Here's a shot (photographic, not alcoholic) from 1968.

WITH THE KID BROTHER. THE PITCHER READS: "BET YOU CAN'T." I COULDN'T THEN. I COULD A FEW YEARS LATER.
CON EL HERMANITO. LA JARRA DICE: "APUESTA QUE NO PUEDES". YO NO PODRÍA EN EL MOMENTO. YO PODRÍA POCOS AÑOS DESPUÉS.
MOOSE,AFTER ONE TOO MANY... BIRDS?
MOOSE, ¿DESPUÉS DE UNO DEMASIADO... PÁJAROS?

  1. Some people drink to forget, I forget to drink. Moose looks so lovable.

    1. Travel,
It’s difficult to forget to drink her. Beer and wine are cheaper than soft drinks and many places offer complementary shots after dinner.

  2. My parents had friends with a bar like this -- with paneling like this, and with chairs like this -- and we would go there for New Year's Eve some years. It was so cool to me!

    1. Judy,
My mother didn’t think much of it but we kids immediately made it home.

  3. I, too, have had my share and then some, and end up looking like Moose!

    1. Bob,
I wish I had looked like Moose. No one usually knew when I had had too much except that i became morose.

  4. Travel: I too forget to drink and after MANY attempts to "acquire a taste" for various types of alcohol, I've come to the conclusion that I really don't care for it.
Mitch: There are parallel universes. My Aunt Margaret and Uncle Tony had a similar bar in their basement and we cousins would always congregate in the basement...what made the bar so fascinating? Maybe it was a status symbol...one our family didn't have.

MY aunt Margaret and uncle tony too!!! Sorry. Just kidding. We thought it was cool. My mother thought it was tacky. My father enjoyed a drink.

    1. Jim,
I have a photo of my family at a wine tasting around 1969. The Kid Brother was the only one who didn’t have a drink (he was 9) and he was the only one who looked tipsy.

  7. Basement bar decor hasn't changed much in 50 years. My brother's looks pretty much like this.

    Funny picture of Moose.

Oh Goan. I didn’t think you could even get that paneling anymore!

  8. My father worked for a distillery but didn't touch alcohol though we always had it in the house - which made us very popular with the neighbours. My aunt and uncle had a bar like that in their rec room which went basically unused.

That bar got a lot of use. My aunt and uncle had lots of friends and we kids loved it.

  9. That's such a good photo of you and your brother! I had an uncle with a bar in his basement too. He collected those tiny bottles of booze that, in the 1960s, you could only get on airplanes. They were all displayed on open glass shelves behind the bar.

    1. Debra,
It would be fun to build a scale-model bar, 1960s style, and then stock it with those airplane bottles.

  10. Moose looks catatonic. You and the Kid Brother look happy and slightly scheming.

I think the Kid Brother may have been told to look like he was ordering a drink. (I get it... CAT-atonic.)
