IN LATE SPRING 1981, just a month or so after my sister Dale died, my parents put The Kid Brother on a plane at La Guardia Airport in New York for his first solo visit with me. I lived in Boston at the time, a four-hour drive from New York — 23 minutes in the air. When the Kid Brother arrived, I began to list all the things we would do that weekend.
"Chuck," I said, "Today we're going to drive up to Rockport. It's a fishing village with lots of artists, shops, and good food. Tomorrow, we can wander all over Boston. The aquarium is amazing and..."
"Hold on! Hold on!" he ordered with both hands raised in the air. "I got jet lag, ya know!"
"¡Tengo jet lag, sabes!"
TWO HOURS LATER, ROCKPORT, MASSACHUSETTS. RECOVERED FROM THE JET LAG. DOS HORAS MÁS TARDE, ROCKPORT, MASSACHUSETTS. RECUPERADO DEL JET LAG. |
I hear jet lag can be terrible, I've never had it. Never been on a plane yet
ReplyDeleteAdam,
DeleteIt can be awful, but not after 23 minutes in the air.
Hey, when you cram a four-hour car ride into a 23-minute flight, I'd be lagging, too!
ReplyDeleteBob,
DeleteIt was actually faster than the speed of sound and they circled the globe to get there.
Hahahahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteDebra,
DeleteThat’s what I thought.
*Snicker*, you guys certainly were cute, jet lag and all!
ReplyDeleteDeedles,
DeleteThat was months before Jerry and I met. Chuck was 21 years old and looked 14.
Bet you guys had fun, once the jet lag was gone.
ReplyDeleteWilma,
DeleteWe did. And we had some good talks about Dale. It was an important visit.
bwhahahahahaha! jet lag! gawd, you two are so damn adorable!
ReplyDeleteAnne Marie,
DeleteAbbott and Costello. Laurel and Hardy. Cramden and Norton.
What a great picture of you two, big smile on your bros face
ReplyDeleteCheapchick,
DeleteThat’s a sweet smile isn’t its!?!
Ohhhhhh, That is priceless!
ReplyDeleteJudy,
DeleteIt never ends.
LOL!! That was wonderful! Full marks to the kid brother!!
ReplyDeleteJim,
DeleteHe’s a card. Especially when he doesn’t mean to be.
I love your brother! He's so funny!
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
DeleteAnd imagine everything said with a pure New York City street accent.
Boston and New York do sometimes seem like they're in different time zones! LOL.
ReplyDeleteWalt the Fourth,
DeleteEspecially back then.
Traveling can wear one down. Would he fly to Spain? The overnights going to Europe kill me.
ReplyDeleteTravel,
DeleteHe used to fly to visit us in California every year. And he flew to Europe with the family several times to visit our sister. But he couldn’t do this trip on his own. And anyway it would be way too disruptive to his ingrained routine now. The trips to visit us became more challenging every year.
