Don't Dawdle, Amaryllis / No Te Pierdas El Tiempo, Amarilis
Hay una versión español después de la versión inglés.
THE AMARYLLIS ON the terrace (plural, amaryllen?) have no interest in dawdling. San Geraldo planted six bulbs last year and decided to see if they might successfully bloom again. For best results you're really supposed to plant the standard flowers — non-hybridized, non-jumbo — and then follow special steps during non-growing season. He didn't follow the rules, but figures what doesn't make it year after year he'll simply replace with more standard varieties. We had some blooms and lots of leaves in November. But look what's happening now.
Deedles: We had a collection of faces (and a pig) when we had the hotel in Palm Springs. We kept several and that's one. It's supposed to hang on a wall, but I didn't feel like putting up another nail in stucco or mortar.
Parsnip: Amazing. My mother had a supermarket-purchased yucca that had to be topped off every few years because it kept hitting the 9-foot ceiling in the kitchen. She was in a small plant shop one day and mentioned the yucca to the owner (who had a really, really sad-looking yucca on display). My mother told hers stood on the floor in front of a south-facing window and an AC/heat convector. The owner of the shop told her she needed to move it immediately. That was the worst place for it. My mother told me she looked again at the plant store yucca and simply smiled (although she probably smirked).

ReplyDeleteand I already knew what show tune you were referencing from the title; I didn't have to look it up!
anne marie:
DeleteOh, I knew YOU'D get the reference.
What's your secret?! Showoff!
ReplyDeleteKMoff:
DeleteThe glass curtain. The right location. Water and a little bit of attention. (Tee-hee)
They won't be thwarted in their mission to bloom. Gorgeous flowers. I like SG's approach.
ReplyDeleteWilma:
DeleteSimply spectacular right now. Will share more photos when there are a whole bunch of blooms. One tuber has 3 flower stems.
wow you have great fingers
ReplyDeleteGosia:
DeleteGreen thumbs.
Beautiful! What's with the creepy(to me) head in the planter?

Purty. Like Carlos, SG has the green thumb!
ReplyDeleteBob:
DeleteWe both love gardening. But Jerry is Mr. Greenjeans.
Oh! The amaryllis is so nice!
ReplyDeleteJudy:
DeleteEven better today. There are pots of them blooming again across the street at the chiringuito, too.
Wow, wow, WOW! But that body you buried in the planter is starting to surface. Perhaps one of the cats dug it out?
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteActually, I think it was one of the cats that buried it there in the first place.
I do not do anything with my amaryllis and they bloom twice a year. I am afraid to start to take care of them, I might kill them.
ReplyDeletecheers, parsnip

I'm sure they'll be especially appreciated by......well, you know who.
ReplyDeleteRay:
DeleteNo interest. They've already sniffed and inspected... and approved... that planter.
Rock me, amaryllis.
ReplyDeleteWalt the Fourth:
DeleteDid you know that there's a Giant Amadeus Amaryllis?!? Another shopping spree and another blog post.

ReplyDeleteTravel:
DeleteThe terrace is making us smile a lot lately. So much going on out there.
HOLY MOLY! Now THEY are great blossoms! Way to go in not following instructions SG!!
ReplyDeleteJim:
DeleteWhatever works. One of the tubers now has three stems. All the others have two.
