Gambling Is Bad (If You Lose Money) / El Juego Es Malo (Si Pierdes Dinero)

SATURDAY WAS OUR friend Tynan's birthday. He and San Geraldo had a celebration of their own at a local casino before meeting Elena and me at Mesón Salvador for dinner.

San Geraldo and I have different opinions about gambling. How do I explain it? Oh, yeah — I'm rational. He is not. But that's beside the point (well, no it really isn't). When they joined us at the restaurant, San Geraldo told the story of his big win. He loves to go into detail about his big wins. This win was several hundred euros at the end of the night.

I noticed, however, that he hadn't first told me he had come out ahead. When he finally finished his dramatic story, I asked, "So, did you come out ahead?"

Tynan smiled.

"No," replied San Geraldo. "But I only lost 40 euros!"

No need to calculate. I knew that, had he not had that big final win, he would have been in a very deep hole (by my standards).

Before my disapproving eyebrows could even get into position, San Geraldo turned to Tynan who was sitting next to him and said, "See? What did I tell you? He's giving me 'the look'!"

"No", respondió San Geraldo. "¡Pero solo perdí 40 euros!"

No es necesario calcular. Sabía que, de no haber tenido esa gran victoria final, hubiera estado en un hoyo muy profundo (según mis estándares).

Antes de que mis cejas desaprobadas se pusieron en posición, San Geraldo se volvió hacia Tynan, que estaba sentado junto a él, y dijo: "¿Qué te dije? ¿Viste? ¡Él me está dando 'la mirada'!"

  1. I guess for some people there's an enjoyment in gambling that makes up for the fact that they usually lose money at it. Go figure.

    1. Mistress maddie,
Jerry would be so disappointed. If he’s 400 ahead, he’ll dump it back in and say he’s going to maximize it!

  3. I suppose it depends on how much you care to spend for the entertainment of gambling. Is 40 Euros too much for a several hours of fun? That sure looks like a 40 Euro story being re-enacted!

    1. Wilma,
Yes he was 40 ahead so it was a cheap evening of entertainment. However had he not won that 400 plus jackpot at the end, he would have been 400 plus behind!

  4. Oh 'that look'!! lol
I was wondering as I was reading how much he put in to 'win' several hundred euros.....mystery solved.
Well, it does look like they had fun and worth the 40 euros in the end. I guess.....

Jerry likes to bet the maximum, which is why if I do go with him I won’t sit anywhere near him.

  6. I'm with you on gambling. It's like taking money and just throwing it out in the street. Luckily, My Rare One has the same attitude so it's not an issue with us.

    1. Debra,
I enjoy it to a point but not to the point of losing what I could have spent on something better.

  7. My dad always did the same thing when he went to the casino. He usually only ended up $20 in the hole, but no matter much he might win, he'd play until he lost all the winnings, and another $20 LOL.
I HATE casinos, with a passion.

Though they do have big buffet restaurants, sometimes.

Jerry and your father would have had a good time together. Some of hose Vegas buffets are incredible but they’re also now really expensive.

  8. J's mother always had the tale of the big win, but never said how much she had wagered to get there. I enjoy take $20 to the Casino once in a while, I consider it spent on entertainment when I walk in the door. If I am ahead, I cash out and leave.

    1. Travel,
Jerry is at least clear on th difference between the jackpot and his net winnings. His aunt once told us she WON $1400 in Vegas. His mother then explained to us that she had spent $3100 to win that 1400.
