Am I Batty? / ¿Soy Chiflado?

La versión español está después de la primera murciélago.

NO, I DON'T think I'm batty. Well, I'm at least less batty than I was a few days ago. Does telling you I'm struggling with my clinical depression help me come out of the darkness or do I admit I'm struggling when I'm already escaping the darkness? I'm sure it's the latter because, if all it took to overcome depression was to tell someone else, there wouldn't be a problem, would there?

But, speaking of batty, for some reason I fixated on the fruit bats (flying foxes) hanging around the aviary at Bioparc Fuengirola last week. Taking inspiration from an image recently shared by the very clever "She Who Seeks" (click here), I flipped some of the bats 90 or 180 degrees. Batty!

EN INGLÉS "TO be batty" (ser como un murciélago) significa "ser loco." (No sé si es lo mismo en español.) Entonces, me pregunto si soy "batty."

¡Loco!

I need a Silkwood Scrubdown now.

While I don't suffer greatly from depression, i do get down a bit every now and then, I shudder at the thought of people telling those who do suffer, "Take a walk! Cheer up! Get over it."

    1. "Mop a floor!" Since I loathe housework, that makes me sink more into the depression. Oh, well, always a big crash after the manic phase :)

    2. Bob,
It isn’t easy not snapping at people that say those things. I try to explain but it’s amazing how oblivious some people can be. I know it’s hard to imagine if you haven’t experienced it but listening wouldn’t hurt.

  2. I recently started following a lady you reduced a bat bat. I had no idea they were so cute close up. After talking to her over instagram, I have less fears of bats now. There actually cute. Or am I just batty and senstive?

    1. Maddie,
I try to not get creeped out by bats. They’re fascinating and helpful animals. This exhibit at Bioparc has helped me relax a bit. I think theses are kind of cute, too.

  3. That first one is a bit eerie. We may see bats and goblins here this evening (the child costume variety) seeking treats.

    1. Frank,
We saw lots of them last night at dinner. And spiders.

  4. I like seeing the bats flying around our place at night and especially in that they are feeding on the numerous midges which we get too many of and any creature that eats them is a welcome visitor. Ever since I saw a bat close up I think of them as being small flying foxes.

  5. Of course you're batty, dear heart! You're unique, kind of furry and you soar! I've never seen a bat outside of the San Diego Zoo, but a friend ended up showering with one while we were camping. It was hilarious seeing a six foot tall, naked blonde woman running out of the communal showers, shaking her hair and screaming bloody murder! I only get that way around spiders.
Do what you need to do to feel better as long as it's not harmful to anyone. I appreciate your hugs and I'm returning the gesture. By the way, that first picture looks like a rabid wolfie thing!

  6. I lived in a house with bats. When the wings are folded they look harmless enough. It's when the damn thing comes flying at you...

    1. Kirk,
I’m working on appreciating their beauty. I still gasp when they move around above me in the aviary.

  7. Bats for Halloween. I love your photos of the bats. They look like winged dachshunds, but cuter.

Long ago, we had close encounters with fruit bats in a zoo enclosure in Queensland. They were very friendly and curious. One became particularly fascinated with a cable on Dennis's flash attachment for his camera. It took some careful persuading to get it to let go. Like Heron, we welcome bats around our our place to help with insect control. We built a nice bat house for them, which they use - although they like the space between the bat house and the wall it is mounted on more than they do the inside of the bat house. Whatever.

    1. Wilma,
Due to silhouettes I could only do closeups of the bats. So glad I did! These fruit bats are making me appreciate their beauty. They really are adorable when they move around and watching them eat fruit is wonderful.

  8. I love bats and I have several that fly/zoom around at twilight. Every summer Tucson has two huge bat colony under the North Campbell Bridge and the Pantano Bridge. At sundown they all fly out. It is very exciting.
    The photos are wonderful.

    cheers, parsnip and badger

We really appreciated them when we’d see them out at night in different places we lived. I’m learning to like them at Bioparc.

  11. Cool! They do look like little foxes, or puppydogs. We have bats here, but of a different variety. They fly around outside the house from dusk 'till dawn. I like them because they eat flying insects, like mosquitoes.

I learned to appreciate them in Connecticut when they would fly at night and eat thousands of mosquitoes!

  12. Sadly our bats here in Nova Scotia have been decimated by a deadly fungal disease. We are waiting for them to reappear some day. Our mosquito population has increased tenfold! I built bat houses a few years back to attract more if possible.
Depression has a mind of its own. You are fortunate, if I may say that, to know yourself so well and at least can predict its path. Hping you find more 'bats' to help you along, Mitch.

  13. I love bats!! We used to have quite a bit and they would come out and fly by our heads when in the pool. Sadly, we didn't see any this summer and I had heard they are slightly going extinct. We need bats!! They eat mosquitoes and here in Dallas the mosquitoes are plentiful.

It really is I’m sure much less tolerable without them. Each one takes care of a huge amount of mosquitoes. Hope they return to your area.
