THE TOWN OF Vejer de la Frontera is in Cádiz Province (we live in Málaga Province) on a hilltop overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar. It dates back to the 8th century when it was a Moorish town. The town was under Moorish rule (and style) until San Geraldo's 22-greats grandfather, Saint Ferdinand of Castille (King Ferdinand III), captured it for the Christian Spaniards. You'd think that with that family connection, San Geraldo would have been able to find the parking lot without any help from me.

I love this kind of stuff! You can close your eyes and go back in time. Now to be crass, because it's me, that next to the last picture, SG isn't marking his territory is he? *Sigh*, I used to be a good girl.

DeleteThese White Villages are all over Southern Spain. Some are just quaint. Others, like Vejer, are breathtaking and historic. I had to look back at the photo of Jerry. I wonder if anyone else thought like you and just won't admit it. No, he was NOT peeing. He was walking up those stairs. I thought it was artsy. Silly me!
@deedles - hee hee hee!
ReplyDeleteI love architectural posts. does SG ever feel his ancestors breath whilst standing in spots like this?
anne marie:
DeleteThe fact that Jerry has so much documented history of his ancestry makes these exploration all the more fascinating and real for us both.
I'm in love with that town. Can you guys make room.....im leaving this dump of trumps.
ReplyDeleteMistress Maddie:
DeleteYeah, Spanish citizenship (we're eligible in another 3 years) is looking more and more interesting. And, there's plenty of room here for you!
I always hate trying to find a parking spot. Despite my ties to the Plantagenet dynasty, England won't let me drive on the right side of the road. Jerks!
ReplyDeleteAdam:
DeleteI think you should rent a car in England and give it a try. If they stop you, just tell them about your relatives.
I love Spain I must come back one day
ReplyDeleteGosia:
DeleteWe love it here, too, obviously.
Enjoyed the tour of this beautiful historical town.
ReplyDeleteSG must have felt that part of him was like being 'home'!
Jim:
DeleteJerry's ancestry does make these trips much more real for us. It was the same when traveling through New England.
Very exotic. I love it!
ReplyDeleteKirk:
DeleteWe didn't even know about Vejer until a couple of months ago. We talked about going and then Tere phoned from Conil. That decided it!
Where was everyone? It looks almost deserted. Or maybe you were very strategic with your lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteWilma:
DeleteHeat of the afternoon during siesta. Not everything was open and many people were having lunch. When we arrived around 2, the Plaza de España was buzzing with activity. By 4, it had calmed down. (Also, I require everyone to leave when I'm taking pictures.)
You'll never forget this place!
ReplyDeleteDebra:
DeleteYou're so right. Such a satisfying story for Jerry. I'm sure in another year of telling, we'll have walked 47 miles -- all uphill.
Beautiful! I especially like that fountain and the square it's in. Looks so refreshing.
ReplyDeleteWalt the Fourth:
DeletePlaza de España is exceptional... and the ice cream was good, too.
Oh my HEAVENS!! What a place!! I love these photos. Geeeeze.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe there is Parking Vejer and Vejer Parking (yes, yes, referring to last post). I am enjoying you two having a getaway--thanks for including us! How is your eye healing, Mitchell?

DeleteIt was a fun couple of days. My eye is doing really well. Some other problems as a result that I won't go into here -- because i am so sick of hearing myself whine. But it WILL all soon pass. Vision is still a bit odd (blurry sometimes, and in and out of focus) and too soon to get new glasses. But I've been exercising (within reason) again and doing my 4–5-mile daily walks plus any other walking I can, so definitely doing better. Thanks!
Lovely pics! I sure am looking forward to visiting Spain again!
